The EZ Maintenance Grass
For a great lawn
this spring (March, April, May)…
Mowing:
Mowing is probably the most important maintenance practice
for a good-quality lawn but is probably the most overlooked
maintenance practice as well.
Mow 1-2” with a sharp standard rotary
mower every 7-10 days. You can mow EMPIRE as low as 5/8”
with a reel-type mower; shorter heights require regular and
more frequent mowing. To avoid scalping, never cut off
more than 1/3 of the leaf blade at any one time.
Fertilization:
For best results, perform soil analysis!
After danger of late frost, use a balanced time
release fertilizer with about a 16-4-8 NPK ratio. EMPIRE
only needs about 3 lbs of N per 1000 sq.ft. per year. You
should apply enough for 1 pound of active N per 1000
sq.ft. after danger of late frost. Use products with
iron to darken the green color.
Herbicides:
***No herbicides should be applied to newly installed turf.
Must wait two growing months before any herbicide
applications.
For existing winter weeds, they will soon die with the
warmer weather; therefore there is really no need to apply
herbicides. Simply mow and they will soon go away.
During the May/June time period, there are many
post-emerge herbicides to use depending on what weeds
you may have. Always follow the herbicide labels
for each herbicide (make sure it is labeled for
zoysiagrass) provided by your local lawn care store.
For more complete information about weed control, please
refer to the “Chemical Weed Control For Home Lawns”
published by the Alabama Cooperative Extension Program.
Here are some herbicides labeled for Zoysias: Acclaim Extra
and Fusilade II (for Bermuda, Crabgrass), Manor (for
broadleafs), MSMA (for grasses), Trimec Plus (for broadleafs
and grasses), Drive 75 (for Torpedo, Crab, and Goose grass),
and Manage (for sedge).
Insects:
As a preventative treatment, in late May apply Bayer
Advanced Season Long Grub Control to lawn to take care of
any grubs. This insecticide can be found at Lowes, Home
Depot, and most lawn care stores. Always follow
insecticide label. For other pests, time is of the
essence in diagnosing and treating insect problems. If you
suspect or notice insect problems, contact your local lawn
care provider, extension agent, or us toll free at
866-467-3288.
Diseases:
Although
there have been few diseases that affect EMPIRE, time is of
the essence in diagnosing and treating disease problems. If
you suspect or notice disease problems, contact your local
lawn care provider, extension agent, or us toll free at
866-467-3288.
